Biography

Pamela Davidson is a Professor of Russian Literature at University College London, where she has significantly contributed to the School of Slavonic and East European Studies. Her academic journey began at Newnham College, Cambridge, followed by postgraduate research at St Antony's College, Oxford, focusing on comparative literature. Davidson's doctoral thesis examined the reception of Dante in Russia, particularly through the works of Russian Symbolist poets and philosophers, such as Viacheslav Ivanov. She was awarded a Junior Research Fellowship at Queen's College, which allowed her to live in Moscow for years, engaging with literary archives and the cultural complexities of Soviet life during the late Brezhnev era. Her experiences with writers and the unofficial Russian intelligentsia during this time profoundly influenced her intellectual and personal development. In 1981, she joined the University of Birmingham as a Lecturer in Russian, later moving to the University of Surrey, and eventually to SSEES in 1993, prior to its merger with UCL in 1999. Davidson served as the Head of the Russian Department from 2003 to 2006 and held various leadership roles within SSEES, including Head of Teaching and Graduate Tutor. Her extensive service to the academic community includes a Leverhulme Research Fellowship and acting as Director of the CEELBAS Centre Doctoral Training.
