Biography

Pamela Matson is an interdisciplinary sustainability scientist, academic leader, and organizational strategist. She served as the dean of Stanford University's School of Earth, Energy, and Environmental Sciences from 2002 to 2017, where she built interdisciplinary departments and educational programs focused on resources, environment, and sustainability. As the Goldman Professor of Environmental Studies and Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, Matson leads the graduate program in Sustainability Science and Practice. Her research addresses a range of environmental sustainability issues, including sustainability in agricultural systems and vulnerability and resilience of specific communities to climate change. An emerita faculty member, she continues to engage with questions related to transformational change in sustainability goals and advises Stanford's related efforts. Matson has served on advisory boards for the World Wildlife Fund and the National Academy of Sciences and has published extensively. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received numerous accolades, including the MacArthur Foundation Award.
