Biography

Pamela Stern is a socio-cultural anthropologist conducting research primarily in the areas of citizenship and the historical practice of anthropology. Her work explores how individuals and communities experience and enact feelings of obligation and belonging to the state, with a particular focus on the employment context of citizenship attachment. Stern has completed ethnographic fieldwork in various citizenship sites across Canada, including the Inuvialuit community of Ulukhaktok in the Northwest Territories, Cobalt in Ontario, and New Westminster in British Columbia. She is currently working on a research project entitled 'Historicizing Canadian Inuit Ethnography' which critically examines the involvement of anthropologists, geographers, and social scientists in the Canadian government's administration of Inuit lands and communities following World War II.
