Pamela Sugiman is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at Toronto Metropolitan University. She specializes in oral history, memory, women's history in Canada, and the experiences of marginalized groups, including the working-class and racialized communities. Her early research documented the emergence of working-class unionism and trade union feminism through an analysis of women in the auto manufacturing plants from 1917 to the late 1970s. Sugiman's work also includes the experiences of Black men working in auto foundries in southern Ontario, highlighting their dangerous and arduous labor. Her writings reflect a deep engagement with personal memory and oral history, particularly around the World War II internment of Japanese Canadians and their forced resettlement. She is currently co-director of a collaborative project that focuses on women's activism in Canada and aims to create and preserve oral history interviews with grassroots women. Sugiman has extensive leadership experience, having served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at TMU and as the Chair of the Department of Sociology. She has received numerous awards for her contributions to research and teaching, including the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Canadian Sociological Association and the Marion Dewar Prize for Canadian Women’s History.
