Dr. Panos Papapanou

Biography

Panos N. Papapanou is a professor at the College of Dental Medicine, Columbia University. He is internationally recognized for his research in the epidemiology of periodontal diseases, particularly focusing on microbial and host-derived risk factors contributing to the pathobiology of periodontitis and its role in general health conditions such as stress, atherosclerosis, and pregnancy complications. His research is extensively funded by the National Institutes of Health and various industry foundations. Dr. Papapanou has served on the advisory boards of several scientific journals and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. Additionally, he has held significant leadership roles, including President of the Periodontal Research Group of the International Association of Dental Research. His expertise encompasses various aspects of periodontics including dental implants, non-surgical and surgical treatment of gum disease, and periodontal therapy. Dr. Papapanou has received numerous accolades for his contributions to the field, including the Jens Waerhaug Research Prize and the Anthony Rizzo Young Investigator Award. His ongoing research projects involve analyzing serological markers of periodontal infections and their systemic implications, particularly in relation to adverse pregnancy outcomes and cardiovascular health. He is also actively engaged in the classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases through the American Academy of Periodontology.
