Paola Filippucci is a social anthropologist and a Senior College Lecturer in Social Anthropology at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge. With an academic background in archaeology from the University of Sheffield, she pursued her Master's and Doctorate in Anthropology at Cambridge. Her archaeological background significantly influences her anthropological research, which encompasses social memory, perceptions of the past, history, heritage, and the materiality of landscapes. Filippucci has conducted ethnographic research in Italy, France, and Belgium, particularly addressing conflict and post-conflict scenarios, including the World War battlefields of the Western Front. She is a member of the Heritage Research Centre at the Department of Archaeology, Cambridge, and teaches on the Heritage MPhil programme, as well as undergraduate courses in anthropology. Her current research focuses on how the battlefields of the Western Front are remembered and commemorated in the 21st century, examining the social memory of World War populations and the roles of physical remains in commemoration. She is involved in an E.U.-sponsored project investigating the transformation of the Verdun battlefield site and its memory.
