Biography

Paola Oliveri earned her M.Sci. in Biological Sciences in 1992, focusing on molecular biology, and completed her PhD in Cellular Developmental Biology in 1997 at the University of Palermo, Italy. She then joined the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to work in the laboratory of Eric Davidson, a renowned pioneer in gene regulatory network (GRN) biology. During this time, she developed functional genomic tools and logical modeling approaches to study the GRNs that control cell fate specification during development. In 2008, she joined University College London (UCL) as a Senior Lecturer and was promoted to Professor of Developmental Evolutionary Biology in 2019. Since January 2021, she has served as Head of Teaching (Strategy) for Biological Sciences degrees at UCL, overseeing curriculum development and pedagogical innovation. Currently, she leads a research group focused on understanding the evolution of cell types and the molecular mechanisms governing cell fate specification, using marine invertebrates as experimental systems.
