Biography

Paolo Bortolussi is a flutist and educator, currently serving as a Lecturer in Flute and Director of the Contemporary Chamber Music at the University of British Columbia's School of Music. He is celebrated for his dedication to contemporary music, having premiered over 250 works by living composers, including those by Dorothy Chang, Jocelyn Morlock, and Aaron Gervais. In addition to his teaching position, Paolo is a co-artistic director of the Nu:BC Collective, and has actively participated in festivals across Canada and Asia. His solo release, 'Israfel', received multiple nominations for the Western Canadian Music Awards. As the principal flutist and New Music Advisor for the Vancouver Island Symphony, he is a pivotal figure in the Canadian Concerto Project, where he has commissioned and premiered five new concertos. His album 'Quinary' features Jocelyn Morlock’s flute concerto 'Ornithomancy', which was also nominated for multiple awards. Raised in Halifax, Paolo holds degrees from the University of Ottawa and Indiana University, including a Master's and Doctorate in Music. He is also a sought-after clinician and adjudicator, presenting masterclasses throughout North America and in countries like Korea and Taiwan.
