Paolo Calvi joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington as an associate professor in structural engineering in September 2015. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, where he gained extensive experience in the area of advanced experimental and numerical response of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures, with a particular emphasis on shear critical structures subjected to monotonic, cyclic, and dynamic loads. Prior to his appointment, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), focusing on the protection of non-structural elements in structural systems through base isolation techniques. His current research interests include developing mechanical models to estimate the residual strength of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete bridge structures based on observable crack patterns. He has been involved in the testing of over 70 large-scale structural elements including beams, panels, and walls, and is a registered Professional Engineer in Italy, participating in international research and consulting projects across Europe, Canada, and the USA.
