Following a brief period of research at St John's College, Oxford, he became a Lecturer in 1992 and then a Senior Lecturer in 1998 in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. In 2002, he was elected as the Herbert Nicholas Fellow in Classical Philosophy at New College, Oxford. He has held his current position since moving to Geneva in 2011.
