Biography

Paolo Squatriti is a Professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, obtained in 1990. His research focuses on the transition from Roman hegemony to early medieval cultural and political fragmentation in Europe. Squatriti aims to understand the great transformation in Mediterranean and Italian history from a rural viewpoint. He attempts to reconstruct the societal changes that occurred on the ground as the vast bureaucratic imperial state collapsed and successor societies emerged. His scholarship analyzes stateless, non-capitalist societies and their methods of procuring essential resources, such as water. Additionally, he explores forest history and the changes in woodlands over a millennium, as well as how these transformations influenced human culture.
