Biography

Patrice E. Fort is an associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan. With a robust background in neuroscience, Dr. Fort focuses on neuroretina and the interactions between neuro-glial cells. He completed his undergraduate studies at Claude Bernard University Lyon in France before earning his master's degree and doctorate from Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg. His doctoral research uncovered critical roles of dystrophin isoforms in regulating retinal homeostasis, leading to further studies on the impact of diabetes on retinal metabolism and protein synthesis. Dr. Fort has led investigations into the protective mechanisms within the retina, particularly regarding neurodegenerative disorders caused by diabetes. He has been instrumental in identifying protein synthesis regulation and the alterations in the proteome associated with retinal diseases. His current research aims to explore crystallin proteins' role in retinal responses to chronic disease states. Dr. Fort also participates in the recruitment and training of graduate students in the Cellular Molecular Biology program. With extensive studies on diabetic retinopathy, his work contributes to the understanding of retinal cell death mechanisms and developing new therapeutic strategies to reverse vision loss.
