Biography

Patrice Smith is a Professor in the field of Neuroscience at Carleton University. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Ottawa and pursued a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms governing repair in the damaged central nervous system, particularly relating to axon regeneration and neurodegeneration. His work is aimed at elucidating the cell signaling mechanisms that mediate the neuroprotective or regenerative effects of pharmacological agents. The bulk of his studies employs in vitro and in vivo model systems to investigate the intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing axonal regrowth following injury. Smith's research also explores the underlying molecular signals that dictate neuronal cell survival and death, with particular attention to models of traumatic brain injury and Parkinson’s disease. Through his contributions, he aims to enhance the understanding of neurological and psychiatric disorders to aid in the development of effective treatment strategies.
