Biography

Patricia Bruijning-Verhagen is a trained pediatrician and epidemiologist currently appointed as a full professor in Vaccination, Infection Control, and Epidemiology at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), Netherlands. She heads the Infectious Diseases Epidemiology programme and is a board member of the Strategic Research theme on Infection & Immunity at UMCU. Her research primarily focuses on (emerging) infectious diseases with a strong emphasis on public health policy. Key priorities include designing and evaluating optimal infection prevention strategies and vaccination control methods. Bruijning-Verhagen has led several European population transmission studies on COVID-19 and has participated in multiple European research consortia related to emerging infections, funded by the Innovative Medicine Initiative. She aims to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases and establish an international research infrastructure for a rapid scientific response to new infectious disease threats. Her group also assesses the impact of vaccine implementation and generates evidence to inform vaccine policymaking.
