Dr. Patricia Graham

Biography

Patricia Albjerg Graham is a leading historian of American education with a distinguished career that began in Deep Creek, Virginia. She taught in various locations including Norfolk, Virginia, and New York City, and served as a high-school guidance counselor. From 1965 to 1974, she was the director of Barnard College's Education Program, collaborating with teachers and administrators in New York City to assist beginning teachers. Her academic tenure includes roles as lecturer and assistant professor at Indiana University, visiting professor at Northern Michigan University, and professor of history and education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Graham's leadership roles include serving as dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and president of the Spencer Foundation. She was appointed president of the National Academy of Education and served as vice president of the American Historical Association. Graham holds a bachelor's degree from Purdue University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. She has published notable works including 'Schooling America' and 'Knowledge Economy Postsecondary Education' and has received multiple honorary degrees.
