Dr. Patricia Gruits

Biography

Patricia Gruits is a Design Critic at Harvard Graduate School of Design and Co-Executive Director of MASS, a non-profit architecture firm focused on advancing model practices that promote justice and human dignity through design. With decades of experience, Patricia has guided transformative projects globally, including those in the fields of health, education, housing, and public landscapes. She champions trauma-informed design and regenerative systems, leading interdisciplinary teams to integrate research, equity, and community engagement into the design process. Her tenure at MASS’s Boston Studio and Africa Studio has seen her lead acclaimed projects such as the African Leadership University and the Ellen DeGeneres Campus for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Under her leadership, MASS has expanded its global reach and influence, shaping fields through advocacy and research. The organization has earned prestigious awards, including the National Design Award in Architecture from the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and Firm of the Year from the American Institute of Architects. Patricia is also a co-author of the Purpose Built series, providing resources for funders and non-profits to implement mission-driven design strategies, and serves on the Board of the Boston Society of Architecture Foundation.
