Biography

Dr. Patricia Macchiaverni is a biologist with dual degrees in Biological Sciences. She began her academic career at the University of São Paulo (USP), where she obtained a Master's and PhD in Immunology. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the transmission of antibodies related to house dust mite allergy from mothers to infants through placenta and breast milk. Dr. Macchiaverni has collaborated extensively on understanding tolerance mechanisms in human and animal models, particularly regarding breastmilk’s role in allergy prevention. From 2013, she worked at the University of Campinas, Brazil, integrating population-based data to study the effects of allergen exposure through breast milk on child development. Transitioning to industry in 2014, she held positions as Medical Science Liaison and Senior Scientific Manager in immunology at major pharmaceutical companies. In October 2017, she joined the University of Western Australia as a research fellow, continuing her work on the immunomodulatory properties of breast milk and their impact on allergy prevention. Her work aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals on health and well-being.
