Biography

Patricio Mendez is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. He has a strong background in materials engineering with a focus on welding and materials processing. His expertise includes metallurgy, heat transfer, magnetohydrodynamics, and thermodynamics, which he applies to various real-world applications such as wear protection in mining, oil extraction, and alloy and procedure development. Professor Mendez has been with the University of Alberta since January 2009, after previously teaching and researching at the Colorado School of Mines. He has consulted for Exponent Inc. and co-founded Semi-Solid Technologies Inc. in Cambridge, MA. He holds both a Ph.D. and M.S. degree in Materials Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as well as a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Buenos Aires. An accomplished researcher, he has published 68 indexed publications and holds 9 patents. His honors include the UofA Outstanding Mentorship Undergraduate Research Award and several accolades from AWS and ASM. Professor Mendez is also a Fellow of the American Welding Society.
