Biography

Patrick N. Breysse, PhD, MHS, is a Professor Emeritus at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research focuses on evaluating and controlling chemical, biological, and physical factors that impact human health and well-being, with a particular interest in environmental health sciences. Dr. Breysse has directed the ABET accredited Occupational Environmental Hygiene Academic Program and co-directed the Center for Childhood Asthma in Urban Environments. His work includes exposure assessment research, pollutant source characterization, and the development and use of biomarkers to assess exposure, dose, and effect. His current research addresses the impact of indoor and outdoor air pollution on respiratory health in relation to childhood asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and respiratory tract infections. Additionally, he leads studies on secondhand smoke exposure globally to support tobacco control policy development. His collaborative work extends to complex health exposure studies in countries including Peru, Nepal, Mongolia, Colombia, and India, and he also collaborates with colleagues in Material Sciences and Engineering to develop novel sensor technology using organic semiconductors.
