Dr. Patrick Calhoun

Biography

Patrick Shields Calhoun is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Duke University. He specializes in the assessment and treatment of psychological and behavioral sequelae associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), utilizing cognitive-behavioral interventions to mitigate symptoms, aggression, and substance misuse. His research interests encompass the psychological, behavioral, and health consequences of traumatic stress, as well as the health services research related to PTSD and associated behavioral challenges. He focuses on identifying innovative health behavior change interventions to decrease smoking, alcohol, and drug misuse. Dr. Calhoun's work also emphasizes implementation science and psychometric assessment methodology. He obtained his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1998, and has held various academic positions, advancing from Assistant Clinical Professor to Associate Professor, and ultimately to Professor at Duke University. He is a member of the Duke Cancer Institute and has received numerous grants for his research, reflecting his commitment to improving treatment and outcomes for individuals affected by PTSD and related conditions.
