Patrick Dumont studied political science at Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium and obtained his PhD from Université de Genève in Switzerland. He became a Professor at the Australian National University (ANU) in 2017, having previously held a position at the Université du Luxembourg. He served as a visiting fellow at the University of California, Irvine during the 2014-2015 academic year and had earlier been a visiting fellow at ANU in July-August 2011. Dumont is a co-founder of the Selection Deselection Political Elites (SEDEPE) international network alongside Keith Dowding and is the co-convenor of the Standing Group on Elites and Political Leadership within the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) with Matthew Kerby. Additionally, he chaired the Research Committee on 'Elites' for the International Political Science Association (IPSA). Dumont is also a co-editor of the Routledge Research on Social and Political Elites book series and served on the executive board of the Political Science Association – French-speaking Belgium (ABSP-CF) from 2003 to 2009, and was a member of the editorial board for Revue Internationale de Politique Comparée from 2011 to 2017.
