Biography

Patrick Finglass is the Henry Overton Wills Professor of Greek at the University of Bristol, where he leads the Department of Classics and Ancient History. He studied Latin and Greek at King Edward’s School in Birmingham before pursuing undergraduate and doctoral degrees at the University of Oxford, where he was a pupil of the late Professor Donald Russell. In 2006, he began his academic career at the University of Nottingham, becoming an Associate Professor in 2012. Finglass has held leadership roles as Head of the School of Humanities and President of the Nottingham branch of the Classical Association. In 2017, he was appointed to his current position at Bristol, where he has contributed to making the department one of the leading centers for teaching and research in the discipline. He is involved in numerous editorial and advisory capacities, including with the Classical Quarterly and various academic journals. Finglass's research focuses on ancient Greek literature, particularly tragic poetry, with a specific interest in authors such as Sophocles and Euripides. His recent work includes studies on newly discovered papyri and a forthcoming monograph on Sophocles. He actively supervises PhD students and engages in outreach activities to promote classical studies.
