Dr. Patrick Gagnon

Biography

Dr. Patrick Gagnon is a Professor at the Ocean Sciences Centre of Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he leads the Cold Ocean Benthic Ecology Lab (COBEL). His research focuses on understanding the structural and functional dynamics of shallow marine benthic ecosystems in subarctic and cold temperate regions. The laboratory implements novel approaches to study ecosystems at meaningful spatial and temporal scales, integrating perspectives from ecology, oceanography, phycology, physiology, remote sensing, and GIS technology. Dr. Gagnon's current work addresses fundamental and applied questions across four primary areas: the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on species interactions, the role of positive interactions in regulating subtidal communities, the biology and ecology of introduced species at their northern distribution limits, and the mapping and monitoring of high-latitude, shallow benthic communities. He emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary research to provide insights into ecosystem dynamics and their responses to environmental changes.
