Biography

Patrick Harkness obtained an MEng degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Queen’s University of Belfast in 2003 and a PhD in space debris mitigation from Cranfield University in 2007. He is a Professor of Exploration Technology at the University of Glasgow. His research interests focus on the behavior of granular materials, particularly how vibration can reduce penetration forces, enhance the performance of augers and drills, and facilitate vertical uplift in confined spaces through innovative concepts like the pulse-elevator. Harkness's work aims to enable exploration in extreme environments on Earth and in space, involving the development of robotic devices and self-assembling drillstrings for sample collection. He has worked on projects related to deep-drilling on Mars and is currently involved with the design and testing of a rocket system, the Ouroboros-3 engine, at his own hotfire facility. His teaching covers various courses related to dynamics, vibration analysis, and space systems, contributing to educational initiatives in rocketry through the R2T2 consortium.
