Biography

Patrick Hsu is an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a Core Investigator and Co-Founder of the Arc Institute. His research focuses on Computational Biology and Systems Synthetic Biology, aiming to understand and manipulate genetic circuits to control brain and immune cell functions, thereby improving human health. His lab, the Hsu Lab, explores the rich biological diversity of nature to create new molecular technologies, perturb complex cellular processes at scale, and develop next-generation gene and cell therapies. The group employs a range of experimental and computational techniques, including CRISPR-Cas systems, single-cell genomics, engineered viruses, brain organoids, and pooled genetic screens. Current research interests include inventing novel approaches for editing postmitotic genomes, developing engineered vehicles for therapeutic macromolecule delivery, and leveraging library screens in brain organoids to interrogate human neuroscience at scale.
