Dr. Patrick Kastner

Biography

Patrick Kastner is an Adjunct Assistant Professor specializing in environmental performance simulation and decarbonization of buildings and cities. He serves as the Director of the Sustainable Urban Systems Lab at the School of Architecture of the Georgia Institute of Technology. His background is in systems engineering, and he aims to empower architects and urban designers through software tools that place sustainability at the forefront of their profession. Kastner leads a Vertically Integrated Project titled Surrogate Modeling Urban Regeneration (SMUR), attracting a diverse group of students from sophomore to graduate levels, representing various engineering disciplines. His doctoral research led to the development of Eddy3D, a microclimate modeling software toolkit for Rhino & Grasshopper, which has been adopted by leading institutions in academia and practice. He has previously worked as a postdoctoral associate with the Environmental Systems Lab at Cornell AAP, contributing to the Ithaca Green New Deal to accelerate efforts in decarbonizing the city's building stock. Prior academic positions include teaching roles at Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania.
