Biography

Patrick Keilty is an Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Faculty of Information and the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto. His research interests explore the politics of digital infrastructures, the sex industries, adult film, media archives, and the materiality of media. He is currently engaged in writing monographs that highlight the historical, cultural, and political significance of sex industries through five key technologies: payment processing, video streaming, web design, databases, and artificial intelligence. Additionally, he investigates the history of important French stag films from the 1920s. Professor Keilty teaches a range of courses including technology studies, adult film history, information infrastructures, digital theory, and feminist and queer studies in film and media archives. His editorial work has been featured in prominent journals, and he has edited several noteworthy publications, including "Uncertain Archives" and "Queer Data Studies." His research has received support from multiple grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). He has lectured widely across university and college campuses in Canada, the United States, Denmark, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Singapore. Prior to his academic career, he worked in libraries and archives in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and London, UK. He holds a PhD in Information Studies with a concentration in Women's Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles.
