Biography

Patrick McCurdy (PhD, LSE) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa, Canada. His research focuses on media communication, journalism, and social movement studies, examining how media serves as a source for social struggle. In 2014, he concentrated on the polarized debate surrounding the Athabasca oil sands. In April 2024, he, along with Chris Russill, will embark on a four-year SSHRC Insight Grant project titled 'Greenwashing Energy Transition: Framework for Assessing Net Zero Communication in the Canadian Oil Sands Sector.' Professor McCurdy has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and edited collections. He co-authored 'Protest Camps' (Zed, 2013) and co-edited influential works such as 'Protest Camps in International Context' (Policy, 2017) and 'WikiLeaks: Implications for Future Communications' (Palgrave, 2012). In 2016, he won the SSHRC & Compute Canada’s national competition for the 'Human Dimensions Open Data Challenge' with his online database 'Mediatoil.' In 2018, he received the 2017 Early Researcher Award from the Faculty of Arts, University of Ottawa. His innovative graphic novel, 'Beast: Making Living Dying Planet,' was published by Ad Astra Comix and released as an open-source download by the Digital Press of the University of North Dakota. His prior research includes a multi-year SSHRC Insight Grant examining the legacy of the 'Tar Sands' and analyzing the impact of a long-forgotten CBC docudrama about negotiations for the Syncrude agreement.
