Dr. Patrick Pilarski

Biography

Patrick Pilarski is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta, specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He holds the Canada CIFAR Artificial Intelligence Chair and has served as a Canada Research Chair in Machine Intelligence for Rehabilitation. Pilarski's research is primarily focused on the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics in rehabilitation technologies, with particular emphasis on reinforcement learning, human-machine interaction, and assistive robotics. His innovative work aims to enhance the functionality of prosthetic limbs through advanced machine learning techniques to facilitate better control and adaptation for amputees. He developed methodologies for continual sensorimotor control and has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles on these topics. Pilarski has extensive experience in interdisciplinary research and contributes to national and international projects aimed at improving intelligent systems in healthcare. He serves as a board member for the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute and has collaborated with major technology firms, such as Alphabet Inc., to advance AI's role in medicine. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and actively engages in teaching and mentoring the next generation of researchers in AI and rehabilitation sciences.
