Biography

Patrick J. Vernon is a Lecturer in Gender and War Studies in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London. His research examines the relationship between dehumanization, Othering, and political violence through queer, feminist, and decolonial theoretical frameworks. Patrick has investigated topics such as online abuse, hostile media representations of minoritized groups, bordering practices, genocide, and humanitarian intervention. In addition to his academic work, Patrick is a creative freelancer who engages with minoritized communities. He served on the steering group for Healing Gardens Bab and co-curated immersive projects that celebrate community belonging. Patrick's published work appears in journals such as Millennium, International Studies Review, International Political Sociology, and the British Journal of Politics and International Relations. His book, 'The Coloniality of Humanitarian Intervention', scrutinizes humanitarian intervention practices, exploring the extent of racism and heteronormativity rooted in colonial understandings of time and space, particularly in the UK’s responses and inactions regarding atrocity crimes. His expertise lies in applying queer feminist approaches to world politics, emphasizing cross-disciplinary methodologies and attentiveness to issues of gender, sexuality, and race.
