Patrik Willi Hoffmann, of German nationality, was born in Landau der Pfalz, Germany, in 1961. He studied Chemistry at the Fridericiana University (Ecole Polytechnique) in Karlsruhe, obtaining his diploma in 1988 and later his PhD at EPFL, where he worked on the deposition of metallic micro- and nano-structures, earning the title of docteur ès sciences in 1992. Hoffmann gained experience at the IBM Almaden Research Center in California, USA, before returning to EPFL in 1995 as an adjunct scientist in the Institute of Applied Optics. By 1997, he was appointed as a Maître d'enseignement et de recherche at EPFL, specializing in microfabrication techniques using lasers. His research focuses on micro- and nanostructuring materials through advanced laser and electron/ion techniques. In 2009, Hoffmann became the head of the Laboratory for Advanced Materials Processing at Empa, leading a group of 30 collaborators. He has contributed to both teaching and research at EPFL, focusing on the interdisciplinary aspects of Microtechnique and Materials Sciences. Additionally, he has held guest professor positions at institutions in Japan and China.
