Dr. Paul Alivisatos

Biography

Paul Alivisatos is a preeminent scientist and entrepreneur who serves as the President of the University of Chicago and the John D. MacArthur Distinguished Service Professor in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering. His research has focused on groundbreaking advancements in nanotechnology and nanocrystals, as well as their applications in biomedicine, renewable energy, and quantum information systems. He has developed innovative methods for synthesizing size and shape-controlled nanocrystals, and has made significant contributions to the understanding of their fundamental physical chemistry. Alivisatos' inventions have been widely utilized in biomedicine, including applications in QLED television displays, and he holds over 50 patents. Additionally, he founded notable nanotechnology companies, including Nanosys, Inc. and Quantum Dot Corp. Alivisatos is recognized for his outstanding accomplishments with several high-profile awards, including the Dan David Prize, the National Medal of Science, and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has also been honored with the Priestley Medal from the American Chemical Society. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1981 and completed his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley in 1986.
