Biography

Paul Barford is the Department Chair and Carl de Boor Professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Boston University. Prior to his academic career, he worked in the industry for eight years, where he focused on network intrusion detection technology and fraud detection services in online advertising. He is the founder and CEO of Nemean Networks LLC, which developed technologies for network intrusion detection that were acquired by Qualys Inc. He is also a co-founder and Chief Scientist at Mdotlabs LLC., which provided fraud detection services for online advertising before its acquisition by comScore Inc. Barford's research interests include computer networking and communications with a focus on measurement and analysis of Internet data and topological structure. He investigates internet security, detection and identification of fraud, traffic anomalies, and malicious attacks. His research has been supported by organizations including the National Science Foundation, Department of Homeland Security, and Cisco. He has served on numerous government panels and has been actively involved in organizing and chairing technical committees for various networking and security workshops and conferences. He holds editorial positions and has contributed significantly to his field through various committees and initiatives.
