Biography

Professor Paul Bartlett holds a B.A. (hons) and M.A. from the University of Oxford, where he also completed a D.Phil. His research focuses on the design, synthesis, and analysis of soft matter systems, particularly studying the structures and dynamics of colloidal suspensions. Soft matter science encompasses a wide range of materials, including polymers, liquid crystals, colloids, foams, and gels, all of which display unique behaviors at scales larger than molecular levels. Professor Bartlett employs experimental techniques such as three-dimensional confocal microscopy and optical manipulation, alongside light, X-ray, and neutron scattering, to investigate how the macroscopic physical properties of soft materials are influenced by their mesoscopic structures. He has led several key research projects, including the Dynamics of Soft Glassy Materials and the Confocal Microscopy of Hard-Sphere Suspensions, and has extensive experience in single-particle experiments involving nematic liquid crystals. His academic contributions are pivotal in understanding the fundamental properties of soft materials, which have numerous technological applications.
