Dr. Paul Bates

Biography

Paul F. Bates is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. in Biochemistry from Pennsylvania State University in 1979 and completed his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Michigan State University in 1985. His research focuses on viral glycoproteins and host factors that facilitate viral infection. The Bates lab studies various viral systems, with current projects centered on pathogenic viruses including filoviruses like ebolavirus and bunyaviruses. His lab is particularly interested in the intrinsic antiviral factor Tetherin, a broadly acting antiviral that activates NF-kB. Bates has developed gene-trap lentiviral vectors and employs innovative technologies to identify host factors that interact with viruses and promote infection. His work is crucial for understanding viral entry mechanisms and holds promise for developing new therapeutic strategies against ebolavirus and other significant human pathogens.
