Biography

Paul D. Beer is a professor of supramolecular chemistry whose research focuses on the development of new molecular sensors, switches, machines, and catalysts. He obtained his BSc and PhD from King’s College London, specializing in organophosphorus chemistry under the supervision of Dennis Hall. His career was marked by a Royal Society European Postdoctoral Fellowship that allowed him to change research directions to supramolecular chemistry with Professor Jean-Marie Lehn at Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. Following his early career as a demonstrator at the University of Exeter and a lectureship at the University of Birmingham, he joined the Department of Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, at the University of Oxford in 1990. His significant contributions to the field have been recognized with various awards, including the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Meldola Medal in 1987, the UNESCO Javed Husain Prize in 1993, the RSC Corday-Morgan Medal in 1994, and the RSC Tilden Lectureship Medal for 2005-2006, culminating in receiving the international Izatt-Christensen Award in 2015. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Murcia, Spain, in 2017.
