Dr. Paul Bentzen

Biography

Paul Bentzen is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Dalhousie University. His research interests are primarily centered around population genetics, evolutionary genetics, molecular ecology, conservation biology, and fisheries biology. His laboratory focuses on understanding the genetic variation found within and among populations of marine organisms, particularly fish. Through his research, Bentzen examines historical and contemporary processes that have shaped genetic variation, providing insights into the ecology and evolutionary biology of these species. He teaches various courses including Molecular Ecology and Marine Conservation Genetics, where he emphasizes the importance of understanding genetic diversity and its implications for conservation efforts. Bentzen also serves as the director of the Marine Gene Probe Laboratory, which applies molecular genetic methods across various biological disciplines, facilitating research and education in marine and conservation biology. He has supervised numerous graduate students, many of whom have gone on to work as research scientists in various organizations.
