Professor Braun received his B.S. degree with distinction from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in Materials Science Engineering from the University of Illinois. He completed a postdoctoral appointment at Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies before joining the faculty at the University of Illinois in 1999. He has co-authored a book and over 350 peer-reviewed publications, awarded multiple patents, and co-founded four companies. Professor Braun has received numerous awards including the Illinois MatSE Young Alumnus Award in 2011, Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2010, and several teaching awards. He was named a University Scholar in 2006, Ivan Racheff Professor in 2011, and Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering in 2020. He has served on the editorial boards of multiple journals and has been a member of the DARPA Defense Science Study Group and the National Academies Technical Advisory Board for the Army Research Laboratory. In 2018, Professor Braun was elected a Fellow of the Materials Research Society, in 2020 as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and in 2022 as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.
