Biography

Paul Capewell's academic research focuses on parasitic and host interactions and the complex co-evolution that occurs as a result. His primary concentration is on Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent of African Sleeping Sickness, and Giardia duodenalis, an important but often overlooked parasite endemic to Scotland. His research employs a variety of molecular genetic approaches with an increasing focus on informatics, particularly whole genome sequencing and exome capture RNA sequencing. Paul has spent several years working in industry as a bioinformatician contributing to the development of diagnostic tests for veterinary healthcare-focused businesses. He maintains links to the industry by acting as an informatics consultant for university start-ups. Paul is deeply interested in teaching bioinformatics at various educational levels and is keen to understand how to reduce the obstacles that limit engagement with the subject.
