Paul Cohen is an Associate Professor and MA Coordinator in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. He completed his PhD at Princeton University and has taught at Université Paris-8 (Vincennes-St Denis) before joining the University of Toronto in 2005. Cohen's research focuses on early modern France, exploring a variety of themes including the formation of nation-states, social history of languages, and the history of empires. His forthcoming book, "Kingdom Babel: Making National Language France, 1400-1815," published by Cornell University Press, examines language formation in France during a critical period. Currently, he is working on two major book projects: one on the history of mediation of linguistic differences in French North America during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the other on linguistic cultures in the early modern maritime world. Cohen has also published works related to contemporary issues in France, including higher education, state economic planning after the Second World War, and the history of food and wine.
