Dr. Paul Docherty

Biography

Paul Docherty has had a distinguished career within the British Council, which is the United Kingdom's international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunities. He studied Economic History at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and later taught English Language and Literature in Spain and at Moscow State University. After completing his M.Litt in Linguistics, he was appointed to various overseas positions, including Cultural Attaché/Deputy Director at the British Council in Moscow and Cultural Counsellor/Director in Prague, Rome, and Paris. In the UK, he took on roles such as Director of Communications and Director of Scotland. Paul has a wide-ranging interest in international relations and diplomacy, particularly in the areas of cultural relations and public cultural diplomacy as soft power. He has been invited to deliver guest lectures on these topics at numerous universities and institutions throughout Europe and the UK. In 2008, he was recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts for his contributions to these fields.
