Biography

Paul Earlie is a Senior Lecturer in French Thought at the University of Bristol, with significant expertise in modern and contemporary French thought and the transmission of ideas through various media. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Trinity College, Dublin, and completed a DPhil at the University of Oxford, focusing on the psychoanalytic works of French philosopher Jacques Derrida. His postdoctoral research at the Université libre de Bruxelles sparked an interest in classical rhetoric and its modern interpretations. Earlie has published a book, 'Derrida Legacy Psychoanalysis' (OUP, 2021), which analyzes Derrida's engagement with psychoanalysis and its influence on his responses to contemporary questions. Currently, he is working on a monograph titled 'Thinking Media: Recent French Thought,' which examines how French writers and philosophers interact with mass media, challenging anti-intellectual perceptions of these forms. He supervises several postgraduate research students and is active in various collaborative research projects addressing the role of intellectuals in popular media. Earlie is also involved in organizing conferences and workshops related to his field.
