Biography

Paul Ehrlich is the Bing Professor of Population Studies, Emeritus, at Stanford University and the President of the Center for Conservation Biology. His research has involved field, laboratory, and theoretical work addressing dynamics genetics of insect populations, evolutionary interactions between plants and herbivores, and behavioral ecology in birds and reef fishes. He has also explored the effects of crowding on human beings and human cultural evolution, particularly health problems related to industrialization. With an extensive publication record, Ehrlich has authored or co-authored over 1,100 scientific papers and 40 books. His distinguished career has led him to be a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, as well as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society. Among his honors is the Crafoord Prize, often considered an explicit replacement for the Nobel Prize. Ehrlich has also been a correspondent for NBC News, appearing on more than 1,000 TV and radio programs.
