Biography

Professor Elkington trained in medicine at Oxford, subsequently working in London teaching hospitals and in Zambia, and completing his respiratory medicine training in 2007. His research on lung destruction caused by tuberculosis began in Jon Friedland’s group at Imperial College London during the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship from 2002 to 2005. He then attained the NHS Clinician Scientist Award from 2006 to 2011, followed by the HEFCE Clinical Senior Lecturer Award from 2011 to 2016. In June 2012, he moved to the University of Southampton to develop a research programme focused on the role of proteases in the pathology of pulmonary infections. Elkington developed a 3D bioelectrospray model of tuberculosis which provided novel insights into disease pathogenesis. He also co-chaired the Faculty Athena SWAN committee, which was awarded Silver in 2015 and 2021. He led the TransFoM programme and was section head of Innate Immunity. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-directed the Personal Respirator Southampton (PeRSo) project, ensuring the provision of sufficient respirators for hospital staff. Professor Elkington serves as secretary for the Acid Fast Club, a national tuberculosis research association, and was awarded an MBE for his services to medicine in 2020.
