Biography

Paul Frehner is an Associate Professor at the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University, where he teaches composition, orchestration, and electroacoustic music. Frehner completed his Doctorate in Music in 2004 at McGill University, studying composition under Denys Bouliane. He is a noted composer whose works span a wide variety of contexts and reflect the existential and experiential aspects of human life and society. His compositions have been commissioned and performed by numerous distinguished artists, ensembles, and orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart Chamber Choir, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Frehner has received multiple international and national awards for his compositions, including the Prize from Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra's International Composition Competition and the Claude Vivier National Award from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. In 2012, he was awarded the K.M. Hunter Artist Award in Classical Music. His notable works include the opera 'Sirius Earth,' which premiered in 2003, and recently, he has been involved with projects exploring live electronics and creating fixed-media pieces.
