Biography

Paul French received a BSc (Hons) degree in Physics in 1983 and a PhD in Laser Optics in 1987 from Imperial College London. He was a Royal Society University Research Fellow at Imperial from 1989 to 1994 before joining the academic staff. He previously worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1990/91. His research group is based in the Physics Department at Imperial and the satellite laboratory at the Francis Crick Institute. His research has evolved into ultrafast dye solid-state laser physics and biomedical optics applications in cell biology, drug discovery, and clinical diagnosis. Current interests include developing and applying multidimensional fluorescence imaging technology, assays for biomolecular interactions, super-resolved microscopy, automated high content analysis, endoscopy, and optical tomography, with a focus on fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) and quantitative phase imaging (QPI). He has worked at the University of New Mexico and AT&T Bell Laboratories and has served as Professor in the Department of Physics at Imperial since 1999, Head of the Photonics Group from 2001 to 2013, and Vice Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Natural Sciences from 2015 to 2023.
