Biography

Paul is an internationally recognized veterinary virologist specializing in aquatic viruses. His research program focuses on reducing the impact of viral diseases on animal production, and he has published extensively in the areas of molecular virology and aquatic disease management. Throughout his research career, Paul has developed new diagnostic tests for aquatic pathogens used in laboratories across Australia and Southeast Asia. His program has enabled improved biosecurity and disease control in fish hatcheries and has identified host and environmental risk factors associated with aquatic disease outbreaks. Paul has played a pivotal role in the detection of national emergency disease outbreaks, such as abalone herpesvirus, Kunjin virus, and Ostreid herpesvirus 1. He is currently investigating the epidemiology of OsHV-1 in Pacific oysters following an initial outbreak in Australia, applying epidemiological approaches to control aquatic animal diseases with a focus on viral pathogens that impact aquaculture production and ecosystem health. Paul's expertise includes the development and validation of laboratory tests for infectious diseases, as well as providing sound disease investigations and surveillance data. He has supervised multiple PhD research projects and is involved in undergraduate teaching.
