Biography

Paul Kindermann is a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton in the Department of Politics and International Relations. His expertise lies at the intersection of empirical political science and normative political theory. Currently, he is involved in an ERC-funded research project focused on the formation of political process preferences in Europe (PoPPiE). His research interests encompass political sociology and democratic theory, particularly the transformation of political participation and representation in liberal democracies. He investigates the implications, desirability, and feasibility of institutional reforms. Paul has conducted extensive qualitative fieldwork in Europe and is working on designing a mixed-methods project that examines the meaning of political process preferences in European societies. Furthermore, he has explored public opinion in Western Europe and the European Union, contributing insights to the role of democratic innovations within the EU, with his work published in the Journal of European Public Policy. Before joining Southampton, Paul taught undergraduate seminars on EU politics, public policy, and political philosophy at various institutions, including the London School of Economics, Goethe University Frankfurt, and the University of Hamburg, and he is an Associate Fellow of AdvanceHE in the UK.
