Biography

Paul Longley is a Professor of Geographic Information Science at University College London, where he directs the ESRC Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC). He has served as the Director of the Geographic Data Service (GeoDS) since April 2025, a successor to the CDRC funded by UKRI. His research interests lie in the areas of Geographic Information Science and quantitative human geography, focusing on urban systems and human dynamics. Longley has published extensively, including two books available in multiple foreign language editions, 12 edited collections, and 212 refereed journal articles. He has supervised more than 67 Ph.D. students and has obtained over 57 research grants, totaling £25,008,700. Longley has held various editorial roles, including past Editor-in-Chief of Computers, Environment and Urban Systems and is a member of the editorial board for several international journals. He is recognized for his contributions to teaching and learning in quantitative methods, has developed numerous online resources and grant-funded initiatives, and collaborates with institutions around the world. His impactful research has also emphasized the public understanding of science.
