Biography

Paul Robert Magocsi is a professor of history and political science at the University of Toronto, where he holds the John Yaremko Chair in Ukrainian Studies. He completed his education at Rutgers University (B.A. 1966; M.A. 1967), Princeton University (M.A. 1969; Ph.D. 1972), and was a Society Fellow at Harvard University in 1976. Magocsi has taught at various institutions including Harvard University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and has held a historian-in-residence position at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany. He was appointed a permanent fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1996 and has received honorary degrees from Prešov University in Slovakia and Kamianets-Podilskyi National University in Ukraine. His research interests include the history of nationalism and the study of particular ethnic groups living in border areas, along with extensive publications in history, sociolinguistics, bibliography, cartography, and immigration studies.
